The Holy Spirit – What Makes It Real

This is where Christians part ways with a secular understanding of these patterns.

Not Just Philosophy

For Christians, this isn't just philosophy or psychology:

  • We have the Holy Spirit – the same Spirit who led Christ
  • God literally dwells in us to help us imitate Him
  • We're not following impersonal patterns – we're relating to a living Person
  • We can have actual conversations with God

The Critical Difference

Christ was God – He had perfect integration naturally. We are not God, but we are called to imitate God. The bridge? The Holy Spirit dwelling in us.

Without the Holy Spirit:

  • We can understand the patterns intellectually
  • We can try to follow them through willpower
  • But we cannot smell like Christ on our own
  • We're like someone trying to make a perfume without the essential ingredient

With the Holy Spirit:

  • We have God Himself helping us from within
  • We are led by the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead
  • We don't merely imitate – we are transformed
  • We actually begin to smell like Christ, because Christ is in us

The Admission That Changes Everything

Christianity requires a humbling admission:

  • "I cannot smell good on my own"
  • "My will is imperfect and leads to spiritual stench"
  • "I need the Holy Spirit to become like Christ"
  • "I must submit to God's will – not an idea, but a real Person"

This is what "being saved" means – not just understanding patterns, but receiving the Holy Spirit who enables us to actually live them out.

A Living Will, Not Dead Rules

For secular people, submitting to a "higher will" might mean:

  • Obeying the laws of the state
  • Holding to moral principles
  • Accepting religious doctrines
  • Submitting to social norms

For Christians, submitting means:

  • A living, conscious God who exists outside time and space, yet is also within it
  • A real Person you can speak to, who answers back
  • The actual Will of God – not abstract principles, but living guidance
  • The Holy Spirit dwelling in you personally

The Holy Spirit's Role in Everyday Life

The Holy Spirit teaches you from within which role you are in at any given moment:

  • When you should lead (be heaven)
  • When you should follow (be earth)
  • When you should speak
  • When you should stay silent
  • When you should act
  • When you should wait

This wisdom doesn't come from a manual. It comes from walking with God and letting Him lead you in the moment.

Picture it this way: You walk through your day with Jesus at your side. In every moment, in every relationship, you can ask:

  • "Lord, who am I in this situation?"
  • "Should I lead or follow here?"
  • "What do you want me to do?"

And the Holy Spirit answers – through wisdom, through peace, through insight in the moment.

This is what it means to be led by the Spirit.

The Highest Calling

The highest calling isn't merely to understand these patterns, or even to follow them. It is to:

  1. Admit you cannot do it alone (confession)
  2. Receive the Holy Spirit (salvation)
  3. Submit to God's living will (discipleship)
  4. Be transformed into Christ's likeness (sanctification)
  5. Smell like Jesus through His Spirit in you (witness)

This is what makes a Christian a Christian – not just believing in the patterns, but believing in and receiving the Person who enables us to live them.

The patterns are real, but without the Holy Spirit we're only trying to produce the fragrance of Christ through human effort. With the Holy Spirit we actually become "little Christs" – not through our power, but through God living in us.

The Dynamic Dance Becomes Holy Work

When you integrate this:

  • You stop fighting over roles (pride)
  • You stop refusing roles (rebellion)
  • You flow with the situation (wisdom)
  • You let the Spirit lead you

The result:

  • You lead well when that's your role
  • You follow well when that's your role
  • Relationships flourish
  • Work gets done
  • Peace fills your day
  • Pappa is pleased

The Core Truth

The transcendent life isn't achieved – it's received. And it's received through the soft heart that is willing to be shaped by the living God.

The moment we soften – the moment we become willing earth to God's heaven – everything becomes possible:

  • The Holy Spirit can enter
  • Transformation can begin
  • We can begin to smell like Christ

This is the key to Christian life and salvation: The soft heart that says "Yes" to being shaped by the ultimate Heaven.
